Frequently asked questions

Thoughtful care starts with clarity.

  • I am licensed to practice psychology with clients in California and North Carolina.

I am also authorized by PSYPACT to provide online therapy to clients in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Washington DC, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Northern Mariana Islands, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

I offer non-clinical speaking, consultation, and training opportunities nationally and internationally.

  • I do not accept insurance payments, and I do not participate on insurance panels. I am an out-of-network provider with most PPO plans.

All clients make full fee payment at the time of the service. If you are interested in using your insurance plan’s out of network benefits, you may request a superbill (or receipt of services) for you to personally submit to your insurance company. Many insurance plans reimburse you directly a percentage of the bill under your out-of-network benefits (usually 30-80%).

If you would like to use your out-of-network benefits, all superbill submissions, communications, appeals, and complaints are held between you and your insurance company.. It is recommended that you contact your insurance company to fully understand your plan, how to submit your superbills, whether and how much they will cover, and their appeals process in the event you are not reimbursed. Here are some helpful questions to ask your insurance representative:

    • What is my deductible and has it been met?

    • How much does my plan cover for an out-of-network mental health provider?

    • How do I obtain reimbursement for therapy with an out-of- network provider?

    • Do I need a prior authorization or physician referral to access my out-of-network benefits?

    • Is a diagnosis required for services to be covered?

    • Does my plan cover online therapy services?

    • Does my plan cover online therapy provided by an out of state psychologist who is authorized by PSYPACT?

  • My rates are comparable with mid-career, doctorate-level specialist psychologists in major metropolitan areas. You can download my 2026 fee schedule, here.

If you are interested in speaking, consulting, or training fees, please contact me here.

Residents of Wilmington or Leland, NC may request availability of discounted “hometown” rates by contacting me here.

  • I offer a personalized, discrete, high-quality service that holds your confidentiality in the highest regard.

Insurance companies require and keep records of diagnoses, can restrain the quality of services available, may dictate how many sessions are provided, or request access to your treatment records.

If you prefer to have total privacy, in my practice you have all the power over whether or not you, personally, release your information to your insurance.

  • I exclusively provide evidence-based therapies that have been proven to be just as effective or more effective online than in person.

Research on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT), and parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) shows that telehealth-delivered therapy is just as effective, and sometimes more effective than in-office therapy.

My clients appreciate the convenience of attending sessions from home or work. Telehealth allows all caregivers to participate, even from separate locations. Many clients find that it is easier to apply what they learn in therapy to the home environment that way.

For younger children, I am skilled at keeping sessions interactive and fun with therapeutic games, screen-sharing, and coaching parents how to support a child’s engagement.

When discussing difficult topics, like trauma, I collaborate with you to find a solution you feel comfortable with (e.g., sessions from your parked car for extra privacy, typing communications if you are concerned may be overheard).

There is no “one-size fits all” in therapy, and we work together to choose telehealth practices that fit your lifestyle and comfort level.

  • Prior to your online therapy appointment, you will receive a link to to join your secure video-conferencing office and how to set up your environment for success.

You’ll find a comfortable, private space where you cannot be seen or heard. You can access my secure link by phone or laptop/tablet, and headphones are recommended for maximum privacy.

If you are a parent, we will discuss ahead of time how to set up any activities or print out worksheets for an appointment with your child. If you are participating in PCIT, we’ll talk through your set-up in detail during orientation, or you can learn more in my virtual PCIT blog.

We make back-up plans for any technology disruptions, so you can be assured your appointment will run as smoothly as possible.

  • You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items or services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees. Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimatein writing at least 1 business day before your service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good FaithEstimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

In my practice, you are provided with a Good Faith Estimate at the time of signing consent documents and setting up your client portal. If you have any questions about your Good Faith Estimate or any other starting paperwork, please contact me prior to our first session.
